Trip planner for Mexico

Plan your Mexico trip — beaches, ruins, and great food.

Mexico is two countries in one for travelers — beach Mexico (Cancún, Tulum, Los Cabos) and culture Mexico (CDMX, Oaxaca, San Miguel). The Wanderlist Mexico planner handles both: cenote-route logic for Yucatán, internal flights with Volaris/VivaAerobus, MXN budget and a clear safety overlay per state.

What you need to know before planning Mexico

Mexico City is a world-class food destination

Pujol, Quintonil, Contramar, plus 50¢ tacos al pastor — book Michelin spots 30+ days ahead. CDMX altitude (2,240m) — go easy day 1 on alcohol.

Yucatán is a road trip heaven

Mérida → Valladolid → Tulum loop, with cenotes and Mayan sites between. Rent in Cancún airport, return there. Roads are flat, well-marked, safe.

Tulum is overpriced and crowded

$15 cocktails, $300+ beachfront hotels, traffic jams on the beach road. Stay in Akumal or Bacalar instead — same Caribbean, half the price.

Cenotes need water shoes and time

The famous ones (Ik Kil, Dos Ojos) fill up by 11am. Smaller ones (X-Batun, Suytun) need a guide or rental car. Plan 2–4 cenotes max per day.

Tipping is expected, not 'optional'

Restaurants 10–15%, hotel maids 20–50 pesos/night, baggage 20–50 pesos. Tipping in USD is fine in tourist zones, pesos preferred elsewhere.

Safety varies by state — stay informed

CDMX, Yucatán, Riviera Maya, San Miguel: very safe for tourists. Some northern border states: avoid. Always check current US/UK/EU government advisories per state — included in the planner.
