What you need to know before planning Indonesia
Bali isn't one place — pick your region
Ubud (jungle/yoga), Canggu (surf/digital nomad), Uluwatu (cliffs/beach clubs), Seminyak (resorts), Sanur (quiet/family). Don't switch hotels every 2 nights — pick 2 bases max for 7 days.
Scooters are essential — and dangerous
Bali traffic kills tourists every week. Wear a real helmet, get an international driving permit (police checkpoints fine €40 cash without one), don't ride drunk. Or use Gojek/Grab.
Gili Islands ferries are unregulated
Public ferries are slow but cheap (Rp180k). Fast boats are pricier (Rp600k+) but cancel often in monsoon. Always book through hotel or BlueWater Express — never random beach touts.
Java's volcanoes need a 2am wake-up
Mt. Bromo and Ijen Crater require pre-dawn starts. Book a tour from Yogyakarta or Probolinggo — solo logistics are punishing. Add 2 buffer days for travel.
Bali tourist tax (Rp150k) is now mandatory
Pay online before arrival via the official LoveBali site. Some travelers ignore it — risk fines or denied entry. Add to pre-trip checklist.
Cash and big bills problem
ATMs in Bali dispense max Rp2.5M ($160) per withdrawal. Carry small bills (Rp10k, Rp20k) — many warungs and drivers can't break Rp100k notes.

Indonesia planning FAQ
Backpacker: $30–$45/day. Mid-range villa + scooter: $70–$110/day. Luxury (cliffside resort, private driver): $250+/day. Two weeks mid-range: $1,000–$1,500 ground costs.
Canggu and Kuta yes. Ubud's outskirts, north Bali (Munduk, Lovina), east Bali (Sidemen, Amed) are still calm. Lombok is what Bali was 15 years ago.
Most Western passports: 30-day visa on arrival ($35), extendable once for 30 more days. E-visa available online. Add Bali tourist tax (Rp150k) — mandatory since 2024.
May–September is dry season (best for Bali, Gilis, Komodo). November–March is wet season — cheaper, but daily afternoon downpours and rough seas for ferries.
