What you need to know before planning Greece

Always leave a buffer day before flying home

Aegean and Cyclades ferries cancel routinely for meltemi winds in July–August. Don't book the last ferry the night before your international flight.

Pick 2–3 islands max in 10 days

Each island change = half a day on ferries. Five islands in two weeks = exhausted. Anchor on one island per region (Cyclades, Crete, Ionian).

Santorini sunsets need 90 minutes lead time

Oia fills up by 18:00 in summer. Sit at a wine bar 2h before, or hike from Fira. Hotel cave-houses with caldera view are worth the splurge.

Acropolis tickets — go at opening or last hour

8:00 sharp = empty. After 17:00 in summer = cooler + softer light. Combo ticket (€30) covers 7 ancient sites and pays back after 2 visits.

Ferry tickets: book online, board early

FerryHopper or Direct Ferries handle Greek ferries cleanly. Print tickets — some operators still don't accept e-tickets at the gate. Arrive 45 min early in summer.

Cash still rules on small islands

Many tavernas, bakeries and beach bars accept cash only. Withdraw on bigger islands; small ones sometimes have one ATM that runs out on weekends.
